New research suggests upward spirals may undo the harmful effects of downward spirals that lead to narrowed self-focus and rigid or stereotyped defensive behavior. Interventions such as mindfulness meditation or loving-kindness meditation are recommended as effective treatments for major clinical disorders that involve emotional disturbances of effect—for example, depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia.

Previous research supports that socializing increases positive affect and therefore, when taken into account with the broaden and build theory, suggests a bidirectional relationship--positive emotions also increase sociability!
